Why Keep Using an Old PowerPC Mac in 2026
We know how good Apple Silicon is. That's not the point here.
A PowerPC Mac running Tiger or Leopard is now over 20 years old — and in most cases, it still boots,
still runs its original software, and still has a keyboard and screen that feel genuinely pleasant to use.
Throwing that away just because it can't browse a modern website comfortably feels like a waste. This page
is where we thought through what actually gets in the way on an old Mac today, and what you can still do
about it.
What Actually Stops Working
It's rarely the hardware that gives up first — it's the network. Most of today's web runs on TLS
versions and JavaScript that Tiger/Leopard-era browsers were never built for, so plain browsing gets
difficult fast. File sharing is another wall: modern NAS boxes, Windows PCs, and current Macs speak SMB3,
which Tiger's Finder simply doesn't understand, so pulling files on or off the machine becomes its own project.
A Few Quirks to Expect
Everything below is what we picked up by actually living with these machines. It varies by person and by
model, but most of it holds.
- The applications themselves handle surprisingly large files. Lightroom's batch export
doesn't choke on tens of thousands of images — as long as you haven't piled on heavy develop
settings. Straight originals are steadier still, and resize-and-compress exports go through fine.
Batch-syncing rotation and white balance across a couple hundred shots is slow, but it finishes. What
stalls is almost never the app; it's the Finder.
- That Finder, and heat, are the real test. Move a few gigabytes of exported photos or
video at once, or copy a folder holding several hundred images, and the transfer stops partway. On our
setup, sending 55,000 photos in one pass freezes every time right at the halfway point, around 25,000.
Anyone who has used these machines for years will know the feeling. Don't expect to multitask on an old
Mac. It's not a hard rule and there are plenty of exceptions, but as a guide: running one app for a long
stretch is usually fine; doing several things in the Finder at once is not.
- Heat depends heavily on the model. The PowerMac G5 has big fans in it and holds up
better than you'd expect. The hard case is the G3/G4 towers. You can fit a modified Windows CPU cooler
and get by, but the trouble is the other chips, not the CPU. Plenty of people add a SATA card and extra
drives — the case has room for it. But the enclosure can't shed the heat, and even with the CPU
cool, something else triggers a freeze. When it doesn't freeze outright, you get a steady stream of
spinning beachballs. We get wanting to keep that clean exterior intact, but unless you'll cut vents in
the bottom or back and fit a large fan, the mod isn't really worth doing. You don't need a bigger power
supply, but do take the heat seriously.
- Power on the PCI slots and the bus is shaky. A USB 2.0 expansion card is a standard
addition, but stick to devices that bring their own power. One external hard drive is fine. Add an SD
card reader or a hub on top of that and it falls over. It may be obvious, but even plain USB sticks often
won't mount once you plug in more than one.
- In short: keep it to one task and it does pretty well. Plug in a lot of things, or
start several jobs at once, and it comes apart. Classic old-hardware behavior. Be gentle, be patient,
leave headroom. Right after boot the Finder feels snappy, so it's tempting to drive it like a current
M-series Mac — don't push it.
Keep the emergency moves in mind, too.
- Save often with ⌘+S as you work.
- When it starts to hang, click another app or the Finder in the Dock, then use Force Quit from the menu
to close just the stuck app.
- If the whole screen locks up and Force Quit won't respond, hold ⌘+Ctrl+Power to force a restart.
- If it won't boot afterward, hold ⌘+Option+P+R at power-on (PRAM/NVRAM reset) — pressing the
reset button and then clearing the PRAM often does the trick too.
- If it can't find the startup disk, hold Option at power-on and choose the disk yourself.
There's plenty more where that came from. Wrestling with the odd problem is part of the fun — take it
that way, and enjoy the old-Mac life.

A Few Practical Tips
- Pick your browser by task. Aquafox/TenFourFox handles most sites reasonably, but for
anything with heavy modern JavaScript, plan to use a current machine instead — fighting that battle
on PowerPC hardware usually isn't worth it.
- Swap spinning disks for CF/SD-to-IDE adapters or a small SSD where the model allows it.
It's the single biggest speed and reliability upgrade for a machine this age.
- Keep a wired or known-good Wi-Fi connection. Older AirPort cards can struggle with
modern WPA3-only networks; a lot of headaches disappear once the network layer is solid.
- Use file sharing rather than optical media or USB shuffling to move files around —
this is exactly the gap AquaLink is meant to close.
None of this requires you to be a retrocomputing enthusiast. If a PowerPC Mac is sitting in a closet and
still powers on, it's very likely still capable of being genuinely useful — it just needs a couple of
the right bridges to today's network. That's what this site tries to provide.
